"Key to The Escondido Creek Conservancy’s success has been the group’s ability to inspire donors to give, securing over $3.5 million in private contributions for land acquisition and stewardship around the creek. The Conservancy recently expanded its fundraising efforts, by forming a unique partnership with local antique dealers using vintage donations to build an enduring legacy. Antique and collectible furniture, tools, jewelry, books, and the like are donated to the Conservancy, which in turn consigns them with the antique dealers. "Claudia Costanzo, a volunteer with the Conservancy who spearheaded this effort, is surprised by the outpouring of vintage donations they have received already. 'It’s a natural fit, where families can contribute pieces of cherished family history to preserve our community heritage.'” ~ ~ ~

"One of the few year round creeks in San Diego County , Escondido Creek flows from the hills northeast of Escondido to the ocean at San Elijo Lagoon. In 1990, a group of citizens concerned about the deteriorating health of Escondido Creek started a conservancy to protect this unique community resource . "Since then, the Conservancy, run solely by volunteers, has helped to protect over 1,000 acres of land in and around Escondido Creek. In one such effort, the Conservancy worked in partnership with the County, key policymakers, and an anonymous donor to acquire the 345 acre property of Adnan Derbas. Located between Lake Hodges and Harmony Grove, the property was originally slated for an 84-home development project. Now that the land is protected, the Conservancy is working with the County to rehabilitate and manage the land, which is home to nesting golden eagles and a variety of rare, native plants. Ideally, the property will be connected to a larger open space preserve, with trails connecting to the Elfin Forest Recreation Reserve and San Dieguito River Valley Park. |
